Impact Statement
This project deepens artistic practice while broadening community access to bold new theatre. PLAN B supports intergenerational participation, giving seniors and young people a platform to co-create and perform alongside a nationally recognised comic actor. The residencies foster skills in storytelling, theatre-making, and songwriting, with outcomes shared in a 45-minute Community Curtain Raiser and public performances. The project strengthens regional–urban exchange, ensuring that country, city, and international audiences see their voices reflected. For the artists, funding consolidates a tested creative partnership, provides stability to deliver an ambitious new solo work, and positions PLAN B for touring across Australia and internationally. |
ABOUT THE SHOW
Beyond Barry Morgan: The Untold Story of Stephen ‘Stretch’ Teakle in PLAN B. Behind the safari suit, dazzling smile, and signature Hammond organ lies a lifetime of incredible stories. PLAN B is a new solo theatre work created with Stephen ‘Stretch’ Teakle and directed by Dave Houston. After three self-funded creative developments in 2025 (two in VIC, one in NSW, all with public outcomes), the project now has a rehearsal script ready and a strong collaborative relationship between director and performer. Residencies in Swan Hill, Bellingen, and Coorabell Hall (NSW, Byron Bay LGA) will combine rehearsal, multiple performances, and community engagement. Activities include story-making, theatre-making, and songwriting workshops for youth and seniors, “Chat with Barry Morgan” sessions followed by “Q&A with the actor Stretch,” and open rehearsals. Each residency culminates in a 45-minute Community Curtain Raiser of local stories, leading into the premiere of PLAN B—a regional work for both country and city audiences.
In PLAN B, Australian musician Stephen ‘Stretch’ Teakle steps out from behind his beloved alter ego, Barry Morgan — a character who almost drove him mad. At one point, Stretch thought Barry was the perfect plan A, but he came to realise Barry wasn’t him — not his stories, not his songs — just another plan B.
This is a raw and revealing journey through music, comedy, and storytelling — a hilarious ride through the life of a true Aussie showman, with stories from the outback, to inner-city jazz laneways, to Europe and beyond. From touring with Warumpi Band to being smashed up by rodeo horses, squatting with rock legends in Copenhagen, and even serenading Bangkok airport officials to get his accordion onto a plane, Stretch has spent decades as a gun for hire—always 20 metres from fame. Along the way, he’s played with Australia’s biggest names, including Paul Kelly, James Reyne, Neil Murray (My Island Home), and Vika & Linda Bull, before TV catapulted Barry Morgan to national stardom. PLAN B is more than just a comedy show—it’s a deeply personal, laugh-out-loud, and sometimes poignant exploration of life before Barry, the whirlwind that followed, and the never-ending chase for Plan A. Stretch masterfully blends storytelling, comedy, and musicianship, sharing stunning original songs, jaw-dropping anecdotes, and multiple instruments in an unforgettable one-man show. Directed by Dave Houston, Artistic Director of Full-On Theatre—a Northern Rivers-based company with an international reputation--PLAN B is an unmissable night of music, laughter, and uniquely Australian storytelling. "There’s never been a Plan B for me," says Stephen. "I’ve been running from it since the first time my dad told me to get a proper job, (and a haircut!)." Even in his years as a stockman on a remote cattle station, music was always there—woven into the dust, the dirt, and the dream. Don’t miss this wild, heartfelt, and hilarious ride through the life of a true Aussie showman. With a little ‘Stretch’ of the truth, of course. |
