REAL SPECIAL is a bold, youth-led production based out of Bellingen, in regional NSW, where young artists reclaim the narrative around disability through authentic stories and humour. Featuring disabled and non- disabled performers, it champions cultural leadership, amplifies diverse voices, and fosters community understanding across multiple venues, promoting accessibility, equity, and meaningful social change.

REAL SPECIAL reclaims language once used to marginalise, creating platforms for disabled youth to express themselves authentically. Bouffon theatre methods—where appropriate —add satirical sharpness, helping participants playfully and politically confront societal norms. Buffon is a physical theatre style using grotesque characters to mock social norms and power. Few, if any, disability-led companies globally use Bouffon, making this a bold artistic choice. Our participant-led model ensures the work is genuine, raw, and representative.

REAL SPECIAL demonstrates that disability is a source of creativity, leadership, and social change.

Please note: Buffon is incredible controversial artform and may be to explore this project. The young people will decide. It won't be a buffon show, but may use elements of buffon.
