The AUSTRALIAN FESTIVAL of SOLO PERFORMANCE
BYRON BAY

Byron Bay is poised to host a groundbreaking cultural event with the launch of the Byron Bay International Solo Arts Festival, coming in 2027.

It will be the first of its kind in Australia. This vibrant new festival will celebrate the diverse art of solo performance, showcasing talent from both international and local artists across theatre, music, comedy, dance, circus, and experimental forms.

Currently in the funding application stage, the festival is planned as an annual event, scheduled around the NSW school holidays. Launching as a three-day festival, it will feature a rich program of solo performances inspired by world-renowned festivals in New York, Canada, India, Moscow, Ice Land & New Zealand.

Day One of the festival celebrates First Nation artists only, curated by Mitch King.

Let’s bring this vision to life. The surf’s up - and the waves we make today will create a lasting cultural tradition for Byron Bay tomorrow.

The Australian Festival of Solo Performance is a bold new initiative celebrating the power of individual voices through original solo work. A defining aspect of the festival will be its focus on First Nations artists, with the opening day dedicated to showcasing the richness of Indigenous voices and storytelling traditions. This initiative seeks to foster cultural engagement and honour the deep heritage of Australia’s First Nations communities. Local artist Mitch King (Widjabul-Wiabul Yaegl) will serve as the festival’s First Nations Producer, guiding this vital program.

A key component of the festival is to mentor, develop, and provide a platform for the powerful voices of young people coming through. The festival team — made up of professional artists across dance, music, theatre, and experimental arts — will help young people create 10-minute solo works. The following year, a selection of these pieces will receive full production support to be developed into 60-minute shows. We aim to develop local youth talent as well as highlight the incredible talent that already exists in our region.

With a strong international influence, the festival will present a curated selection of solo works from around the globe, reinforcing Byron Bay’s reputation as a cultural and artistic destination. Family-friendly shows will ensure an inclusive atmosphere where audiences of all ages can celebrate the arts together.
The festival balances an international scope with a local heart, fostering a community-focused and family-friendly environment. This vision aligns with the goals of Regional Development Australia (RDA) Northern Rivers, promoting regional growth, economic development, and cultural vibrancy.

Our long-term ambition is to attract producers, directors, and agents from the USA, Europe, and Asia — opening up global opportunities for Australian artists and establishing the region as a premier destination for world-class solo performance.
